The Bab (The Gate)
The Bab, Forerunner of Bahau'llah
The Shrine of the Bab, Mount Carmel, Haifa, Israel.
All humanity is one family. The Baha'i teachings emphasize that all of us, as creations of one God, are part of one human family.
The Bab (1819-1850) was a Messenger of God, whose mission prepared humanity for the coming of Baha'ullah.
Baha'is believe that the Bab was an independent Messenger of God, whose mission was to inaugurate a new cycle in humanity’s spiritual development.
The Bab declared his Mission in 1844 in Iran. His writings prepared the way for the mission of Baha'u'llah. He composed hundreds of letters and books (tablets) in which he stated his messianic claims and defined his teachings, which constituted a new shari'ah or religious law. His movement eventually acquired tens of thousands of supporters, was virulently opposed by Iran's Shi'a clergy, and was suppressed by the dominant Muslim clergy government leading to the persecution and killing of thousands of his followers, called Babis.
After six years of suffering and imprisonment, and martyrdom on July 9, 1850 (at the age of thirty) The Bab was executed in the public square of the city of Tabriz. Over 20,000 of His followers perished in a series of massacres throughout Persia.
Today, the majestic building with the golden dome, overlooking the Bay of Haifa, Israel, and set amidst beautiful gardens, is the Shrine where the Bab's earthly remains are entombed
